										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This third Orbison release came on the heels of Lonely and Blue and Crying and includes the hits &#8222;Blue Bayou&#8220; and &#8222;All I Have To Do Is Dream.&#8220; This Bill Porter recording directly onto two-track stereo offers two perspectives &#8211; mono from a fold of discreetly recorded stereo channels and a stereo presentation directly from the master. Porter intended the recording to be presented in Mono and as such recorded the channels discreetly so that the blend in combining (mixing) the two tracks makes for a perfectly layered musical presentation which supports Orbison’s astonishing vocal exquisitely. The stereo version is the rarer original and is quite wonderful in its sonic presentation.</p>

<p>On this release, Benjamin Britten conducts the London Symphony Orchestra performing &#8222;Nocturne.&#8220; Additionally, Peter Pears and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden perform &#8222;Four Sea Interludes&#8220; and &#8222;Passacaglia&#8220; from &#8222;Peter Grimes.&#8220;</p>
<p>Nocturne is a song cycle by Benjamin Britten, written for tenor, seven obbligato instruments and strings. The seven instruments are flute, cor anglais, clarinet, bassoon, harp, French horn and timpani. Nocturne was Britten&#8217;s fourth and final orchestral song cycle. It was dedicated to Alma Mahler.</p>
<p>Nocturne was premiered in the Leeds Town Hall at the centenary Leeds Festival on 16 October 1958 by Peter Pears and the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Rudolf Schwarz.</p>
<p>The theme of the piece, as its name Nocturne suggests, is sleep and darkness, both in the literal and figurative sense. In this respect, the work is reminiscent of Britten&#8217;s earlier Serenade. Unlike Serenade, Nocturne is presented as a continuous piece rather than separate movements. This is emphasized by a number of figures which occur throughout, most notably the &#8218;rocking&#8216; string motif which opens the work. The conflicting tonal relationship between C and D-flat is also evident throughout, reflecting the contrast between the untroubled and the more perturbed aspects of sleep which are also described by Britten&#8217;s choice of poems.</p>
<p>Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia are from Britten&#8217;s opera &#8222;Peter Grimes.&#8220;<br />
Both pieces are often performed together.</p>

Pianist/vocalist Diana Krall pays tribute to the Nat King Cole Trio on her Impulse! set. In general, the medium and up-tempo tunes work best, particularly such hot ditties as &#8222;I&#8217;m an Errand Girl for Rhythm,&#8220; &#8222;Frim Fram Sauce,&#8220; and &#8222;Hit That Jive Jack.&#8220; Krall does not attempt to directly copy Cole much (either pianistically or vocally), although his influence is obviously felt on some of the songs. The slow ballads are actually as reminiscent of Shirley Horn as Cole, particularly the somber &#8222;I&#8217;m Through With Love&#8220; and &#8222;If I Had You.&#8220; Guitarist Russell Malone gets some solo space on many of the songs and joins in on the group vocal of &#8222;Hit That Jive Jack,&#8220; although it is surprising that he had no other opportunities to interact vocally with Krall; a duet could have been delightful. Bassist Paul Keller is fine in support, pianist Benny Green backs Krall&#8217;s vocal on &#8222;If I Had You,&#8220; and percussionist Steve Kroon is added on one song. Overall, this is a tasteful effort that succeeds.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If ever there was an LP to study the perfect art of swing tenor sax playing, then this must be it! In the &#8217;60s, fans of a rich, full sound coupled with a flowing style must have been thrilled when this LP by Ben Webster and his associates appeared on the market. Leonard Feather called the trio &#8222;heavy weights&#8220; and their massive sound certainly matches their corpulence. While it is difficult to single out just one of the musicians, it is easy to distinguish them: Ben (called &#8222;The Brute&#8220;) plays with a raspy, vibrating sound; Coleman (known as &#8222;The Bear&#8220;) is a master of flowing swing; and Budd has an earthy, resonant bluesy sound. The five numbers reflect the jam-like spontaneity of the 1959 session; an Ellington classic by the three in a masterful, inspirational new interpretation; three pieces which are intrinsically and hoc improvisations; and a classical ballad in which Ben Webster breathes warmth and sentiment into his instrument.</p>

<p>Jon Hendricks helped to originate vocalese, which is an art form of adding lyrics to existing instrumentals and replacing instruments with vocalists. He is also considered to be one of the best scat performers. Jazz critic and historian Leonard Feather called him the &#8222;Poet Laureate of Jazz&#8220;. Al Jarreau has called him &#8222;pound-for-pound the best jazz singer on the planet &#8211; maybe that&#8217;s ever been&#8220;.</p>
<p>After his service in the Army during World War II, Hendricks attended the University of Toledo as a pre-law major. Just as he was about to enter the graduate law program, his G.I. benefits ran out, which forced him to choose a different career path. Recalling that Charlie Parker had encouraged him to come to New York two years earlier to look him up, Hendricks took him up on his offer and moved there and began his singing career. In 1968, he moved his family to London, England to further his solo career and so his five children could receive a better education.</p>
<p>&#8222;Qualities one associates with the jazz vocal group Lambert, Hendricks &amp; Ross &#8211; swing, hipness, and witty, offbeat lyrics &#8211; were very much in evidence when band member Jon Hendricks released Fast Livin&#8216; Blues in 1962. A looser approach, however, allowed more room for the instrumentalists to both stretch out and insert perfectly-timed fills with an air of spontaneity&#8230; For someone who has the blues in all kinds of ways, the front man sure seems to be having a good time, spinning tales of friendship, fast living, and fish fries that will inspire smiles more than sadness. Again I applaud Original Recordings Group for picking a less-than-obvious title that well deserves a reassessment and for capturing a natural sound on noise-free 180-gram 45rpm pressings. <p>The two jazz giants Ben Webster and Harry &#8222;Sweets&#8220; Edison had long wanted to record an album together, and in 1962 it came to fruition with excellent accompaniment from Hank Jones (piano), George Duvivier (bass) and Clarence Johnston (drums). Although associated with two different orchestras (Edison/Basie and Webster/Ellington), these two swing kings found that they indeed had a lot in common! For evidence of this classic pairing look no further than these sides!</p>
<p>This album features both horn men on three medium tempo blues numbers &#8222;Better Go,&#8220; &#8222;Kitty,&#8220; and &#8222;Did You Call Her Today.&#8220; In addition, Webster gets two tenor features, contributing absolutely luscious solos on both &#8222;How Long Has This Been Going On&#8220; and &#8222;My Romance.&#8220; After listening to these songs, there can be no doubt that Webster is one of the best balladeers jazz has ever produced.</p>
<p>Edison also gets his moment in the sun as well on the album closer which finds Sweets playing a wonderful, even fairly modern sounding, rendition of &#8222;Embraceable You&#8220; using a Harmon mute. The ballads, enhanced by the wonderful harmonic sense of pianist Hank Jones, are the highlight of this release, and show both Webster and Sweets&#8216; unbeatable melodic sense.</p>
<p>Ben Webster was considered to be on of the three most important &#8217;swing tenors&#8216; along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. Known by some as &#8222;The Brute,&#8220; he had a tough, raspy and brutal tone on stomps but could deliver warmth and sentiment on softer ballads.</p>
<p>Trumpeter Harry &#8222;Sweets&#8220; Edison spent his early childhood in Kentucky where he was introduced to music by his uncle. After moving back to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio at the age of 12, he began playing the trumpet with local bands, eventually landing a spot with the Count Basie Orchestra.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Anyone believing in the old adage that science and the fine arts do not mix must rethink his ideas when he becomes acquainted with Alexandr Borodin&#8217;s biography and his music. The Russian professor of chemistry constantly stole time from his lectures in order to compose; it was musical elements and formulas rather than chemical ones that occupied him..Without a doubt, the Second Symphony in B minor best reflects Russian feeling and temperament. Its rather harsh and mechanical theme is contrasted first by a lively little song and later by a conciliatory second subject. Cheerful and soothing melodies are heard in ever new combinations until the main theme returns once again and the movement is brought to a powerful close. The Scherzo, with its throbbing horns, march rhythms and thrilling woodwinds, is equally electrifying. The contemplative Andante is followed by a highly explosive Finale based on two Russian dance melodies which are widely varied during the course of the music. .Both old and new friends of Russian symphonic music are highly recommended to experiment in their own &#8222;sitting-room laboratories&#8220; with this musically and chemically pure vinyl pressing.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The very fact that Manuel de Falla composed his ballet El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat) for the ambitious impresario Serge Diaghilev and his epoch-making Ballets Russes indicates the historical importance of this work. Although the Impressionistic character of the musical language reflects his studies with Debussy, the composer never once renounces his native origins. Overflowing with the thrilling rhythms and electrifying melodies of Spanish folkmusic, this work achieved worldwide popularity virtually overnight. As so often before in this genre, the Swiss conductor Ernest Ansermet proves once again in this DECCA recording that he is a power to be reckoned with. The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande executes the slightest nuance, the most exquisite of figures and gentlest lyrical tone with meticulous precision. Powerful rolls of thunder, the click of castanets, lively rhythms and rich sonority conjure up a picture of fiery Spanish temperament so tangibly before our eyes that any comment on the recording quality appears almost superfluous. In a nutshell: this record is, quite simply, incredibly good.</p>
