										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>To be sure: no other 20th-century ballet music has ever created such a commotion as this ancient rite of spring: it began with a turmoil which developed into a full-scale brawl at the premiere performance in the concert hall, was sung hymns of praise and suffered devastating reviews by critics who tore the work apart, and led up to the musico-philosophical libel written in the Fifties by that self-acclaimed &#8218;chief enemy&#8216; of Stravinsky, W. A. Adorno.</p>
<p>This thrilling, epoch-making masterpiece remains fascinating to this very day thanks to its bloodcurdling rhythms, its secretive, intertwined melodies, and the boiling, seething, and lashing of the titanic instrumental forces. And Sir Georg Solti and his phenomenal orchestra certainly ensure that all this is brought over to the listener. The notes of the lyrical passages simply fly out of the loudspeakers with the lightness and airyness to which one is accustomed with DECCA recordings from this era. But one can still be astounded by this audiophile work of art: such a gentle, voluminous, lashing and pounding sound-storm is only normally heard live in the concert hall. And precisely because this recording sounds so marvellous, it tops the vinyl charts in the American specialist magazine The Absolute Sound.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Thankfully musical genres have been spared from being described with new buzz words such as &#8222;Kleinkust&#8220; which could be translated as &#8222;Small Arts&#8220;. But music in small forms &#8211; maybe set down on just a few pages of manuscript paper &#8211; certainly exists. Prokofiev&#8217;s miniature, the Symphonie classique, combines several superlatives as regards both its musical notes and form: it is only 15 minutes long, contains a wealth of melodic ideas, and is the most performed of all Prokofiev&#8217;s symphonies.</p>
<p>This four-movement composition employs traditional forms such as the sonata form in the outer movements and the pre-Classical dances menuet and gavotte. The work&#8217;s carefree esprit, serenade-like humor, and courtly elegance is delightful throughout and culminates in a high-spirited sturm und drang Finale.</p>
<p>On the B side is Glinka&#8217;s Kamarinskaya Fantasia, only eight minutes long but captivating with its extremely closely-knit compositional style, and his Overture to A Life for the Czar &#8211; a showpiece whose leitmotifs are truly forward-looking. Alongside these classical-romantic musical gems, Borodin&#8217;s In The Steppes of Central Asia acts as an ideal programmatic amalgamation of the Orient and the Occident, and fits perfectly into this choice of repertoire.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This set of pieces is called Images Pour Orchestre to differentiate it from two previous sets of Images each consisting of three pianoforte pieces. The orchestral Images were begun in 1906 and finished in 1912. In Gigues, the sound of an oboe d&#8217;amore is heard here. In this movement it is first used for the solo tune in slightly quicker time after the short introduction. Iberia contains three main parts: Par les rues et par les chemins; Les parfums de la nuit; and Le matin d&#8217;un jour de fete. The last movement, Rondes de Printemps, takes the music once more into the visionary domain of poetry.</p>
<p>Debussy explains these Images: &#8222;I am attempting something . . . that might be called reality, but what idiots call Impressionism, a term that is completely misapplied . . . &#8220; Throughout the whole set of these orchestral Images Debussey&#8217;s sensitive apprehension of qualities of tone is apparent. The ear of one of the most refined connoisseurs of sound in his generation is at work. The effect is wonderfully clear, stimulating and moving.</p>
<p>Vinyl lovers like those from Speakers Corner can lament about how difficult it can be to dig up audio treasures and enhance them to make them fresh and new. A good mastertape and precise cutting is of prime importance, of course. But a collector&#8217;s heart will also miss a beat when taking a look at the original cover. Record dealers know this only too well and demand a high price for rare original recordings, as though they were dealing in gold.<br />
The rarer the recording, the more expensive it comes. In order to close the gap between the demand for coveted LPs and the potential for speculation with such productions, Speakers corner are re-releasing a number of first-class recordings by Mercury and Decca. All the titles appeared in their catalog but were sold out years ago.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Only very rarely have the orchestral versions of compositions originally written for a soloist or small ensemble managed to escape from the all too bombastic and showy sound effects of many late Romantic works. But in the case of Liszt?s Hungarian Rhapsodies this is exactly to the contrary. Many listeners are glad to flee from the pounding and wooden treatment of the keyboard by some of the young pianists to the soothing tones of the philharmonic orchestra. In<br />
Scherchen?s and the Vienna State Orchestra?s recording it is a delight to bask in the microcosm of Hungarian melodies<br />
which Franz Liszt brought together in his Rhapsodies and which he burnished with a symphonic gold patina with the help of Franz Doppler. Disdainful of all too obvious contrasts, Scherchen achieves a mildness which is nevertheless<br />
full of tension and excitement by fading in the themes as though with a dimmer. And that is not all! If you concentrate on listening to the meditative, even dynamics, you will be rewarded by becoming acquainted with all the refinements of the scoring. This recording is a joy to hear, thanks to the carefully balanced stereo technique which Scherchen, a disciple of the electronic era, employed with the utmost care ? in all his recordings ? to achieve a natural sound reproduction.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bläser machen Krach, treten am besten unter freiem Himmel und in Bierzelten auf und spielen vorzugsweise Marsch- und Volksmusik. Soweit die landläufige Meinung, der entschieden widersprochen werden muss. Denn wer einmal ein gutes Bläserensemble erlebt hat, weiß, dass das &#8218;große Gebläse&#8216; hinsichtlich dynamischer Feinarbeit und Klangpracht einem sinfonischen Orchester in nichts nachsteht. Diese Erkenntnis hat sich in Amerika schon seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts durchgesetzt, und so versteht es sich fast von selbst, dass dort noch immer die besten Formationen zu Hause sind. Das Eastman Wind Ensemble verkörpert den Prototyp der modernen Bläserband, die durch flexible Instrumentierung problemlos ältere und neuere Partituren in Musik umsetzt. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When the evenings grow longer, the autumn leaves begin to fall and Jack Frost calls during the night, then it is time to conjure up the magic world of Tchaikovsky&#8217;s Nutcracker while relaxing in front of a crackling fire..In this double album you will hear the delightfully varied ballet music in its entirety and not just the usual highlights. Each and every one of the highly individual numbers, be it a dance, a march or a waltz, is enchanting with its ever varying orchestral colouring, here merry and impudent and tripping along lightly without a care in the world, there sturdy and vigourous, even coarse. .The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, led by its conductor of many years standing, Ernest Ansermet, is very much at home in Russian repertoire and masters the occasional immense difficulties of the score with bravado. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Convinced of his own historical importance, Richard Strauss introduced himself to American soldiers as the &#8222;Composer of the Rosenkavalier&#8220; when they knocked on the door of his villa in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the end of the Second World War. Already more than 40 years earlier, Strauss considered himself as interesting as Napoleon and Alexander the Great and defended his egocentric Opus 40 (&#8222;Ein Heldenleben&#8220;) by saying that he didn&#8217;t see why he shouldn&#8217;t write a symphony about himself. The &#8222;Symphonia Domestica&#8220;, op. 53 is a musical tribute to family life in the living room, at the dining table and in the bedroom, in which Strauss expresses in a strikingly lyrical tone. George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra conjure up a picture of a happy family life, and the harmonious relationship between father, mother and son, which is sometimes filled with &#8218;joie de vivre&#8216;, gallantry, jubilation but also sometimes filled with disputes. Looking more closely at Strauss and his &#8222;Symphonia Domestica&#8220;, listeners will find – alongside a familiar late-romantic musical language – clear echoes of his unique personal style. Wide intervals, a bold and vivacious treatment of the themes, surprising harmonic changes and not least exuberant melodiousness are unmistakable characteristics of this exhilarating music, which reflects the colossal ego of its composer.</p>
<p>This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head.</p>
<p>&#8222;My own preference in Sinfonia Domestica has always been for the 1964 recording from the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell, a performance so remarkable for its driven energy that one begins to suspect that Frau Strauss may have been crushing pep pills into the family&#8217;s morning muesli. Leading an orchestra that he had trained to consistently outstanding levels of virtuosity, Szell concludes the work in a total overall time of 41:25 as well as clocking up the fastest speeds in each individual movement. Szell&#8217;s propulsive account is, however, entirely appropriate as a depiction of the composer as an ambitious young family man, utterly convinced of his own talent as he strives energetically to establish his rightful place in the world.&#8220; &#8211; Rob Maynard, MusicWeb International</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto combines a potent mixture of traditional concerto writing, compositional history and biographical upheavals. It was one of the last works he wrote before emigrating to the USA, and its classical three-movement form unites a mature feeling for form, sparkling musicality and exceptional violinistic sophistication.</p>
<p>Bartók employs the inexhaustible sources of tonal writing with superb mastery to produce his own distinctive tonal language. In his dissonantly sharpened, expressive, even audacious music one can recognize peasant dance, cantilena, variation movement, rondo form, and twelve-tone themes, which however remain tonal.</p>
<p>During his career spanning 60 years, violinist Isaac Stern recorded this major contemporary work several times and demonstrates once again his superb mastery of his instrument in this particular recording. With bravura he conjures up eruptive snatches of melody out of the rhapsodic depths, allows the slow movement to glow with pastoral sentiment, and tears through the vast variations finale with a perfect command of the score, his instrument and his creative prowess.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When one considers that Erica Morini?s 60-year career on the concert platform brought her together with such orchestras as the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic and took her as far as New York?s Carnegie Hall, the number of recordings she left us is very small indeed. In order to obtain an idea of this violinist?s great talent, which she developed to perfection as one of the very first women to attend the Vienna Conservatory, it has generally been necessary to delve into the shellac record archive. And of course, such records crackle and hiss, thus ruining the listener?s pleasure. But now here is the remedy: a stereo recording of Brahms?s Violin Concerto which the 61-year-old Erica Morini recorded for the Westminster label.</p>
<p>Her clean and highly differentiated timbre, her lyrical expression, technical perfection, and of course her very own thrilling esprit is marvellous to hear.</p>
<p>No matter whether the absolute Brahms fan tucks this LP under his pillow at night, or the collector stows it away in his cupboard, or even better lets it spin around on the turntable, this LP remains invaluable for its documentary and artistic value.</p>
<p>Erica Morini?s 60-year career included concert performances with leading orchestras such as the Leipzig Gewandhaus and Berlin Philharmonic but regrettably she made few recordings. It?s a rare pleasure, therefore, to hear this supreme violinist at her finest in this stereo recording of Brahms?s Violin Concerto in D major, which the 61-year-old Morini made with the Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Artur Rodzinski.</p>
<p>It was recorded in 1956 at Walthamstow Assembly Hall in London for the Westminster label and clearly demonstrates the performer?s clean and highly differentiated timbre, lyrical expression, technical perfection, and the thrilling passion that was her trademark. This outstanding LP is one the collector will treasure for its documentary value and which the music-lover will appreciate for its insight into the work of an artist of real musical integrity.</p>
