Meyerbeer composed Il Crociato in just over one year, between September 1822 and the following autumn, at the end of the German composer’s so-called ”Italian period”. Although this is an opera of great dramatic and musical complexity its première was highly successful with both audience and critics, one commentator accurately describing it as ”a building of highlyapplauded construction”. The plot, so rich in events, skilfully weaves historical-religious elements with private happenings and feelings. Against the background of the interreligious conflict between Christians and Muslims, the story of the main characters unfolds in an efficacious alternation of grand choral scenes and solo numbers with arias and cabalettas. Il Crociato in Egitto was Meyerbeer’s last and greatest Italian success and the opera that made his name on the international scene; it was also the first of Meyerbeer’s grand operas to fall into disgrace. This La Fenice production, directed by Pier Luigi Pizzi, is the first in
modern times and has Patrizia Ciofi (Palmide) and the male soprano Michael Maniaci (Armando D’Orville) in the main roles.

La Forza del Destino was one of Verdi’s more tormented operas in the making, and its first version is quite different from the one we are used to hearing today. In its definitive version, with the changes to Act three, Act four and the finale, it was first performed at Teatro alla Scala on 7th February 1869, and was well received both by audiences and critics. A few people expressed doubts about the mixture of the plot’s tragic elements and some characters’ comic traits; Verdi always defended this choice, which was almost Shakespearean but had no tradition in Italy. La Forza del Destino is, indeed, an experimental creation, by a composer who was already mature but still looking for new incentives and challenges. The composer’s choral writing is quite extraordinary; far from being conceived as a monolithic bloc, the chorus is treated in a variegated and complex way. Throughout the first half of the 1900s La Forza del Destino was one of the more neglected of Verdi’s operas, but from the 1950s it entered the repertoire, and became a land of conquest for all the best lyrical singers of the post war period. Even though in recent years Idomeneo has been staged more frequently, this Mozart masterpiece can hardly be counted among the operas (the Da Ponte trilogy in primis) that made of the Salzburg composer one of the greatest operatic composers of all times. Yet Idomeneo was, in its day, a revolutionary work, animated by music that appears remarkably innovative and profoundly theatrical. This double DVD set presents the Teatro San Carlo of Naples’s staging, signed by Pier Luigi Pizzi, one of today’s most creative directors. Marco Guidarini, on the podium, conducts a cast of international renown.

Every operatic composer has a title that marks a turning point, one that raises him from being almost unknown to sudden fame. For Bellini, in 1827, this was Il Pirata, for Verdi, in 1842, Nabucco. For Massenet this opera was Le Roi de Lahore. Performed for the first time in 1877 at the Palais Garnier to a resounding success – the opera ran to no fewer than 57 performances in the great Paris opera house within two years – this work contains all the characteristic elements of grand-opéra: marches and solemn processions, a ballet, use of countless extras, spectacular choral scenes, concertante sections of great length, a general exotic tint that was much appreciated at the time and a great wealth of melodic invention. The present Venetian production features a high quality cast and documents the last performance of the late conductor Marcello Viotti, who had made the critical edition of the score.
