The Pretender’s first LP is one of the single greatest debut albums ever – released in early 1980 Pretenders shot straight to number 1 on the UK Albums Chart and stayed there for four consecutive weeks. It also made it into the U.S. Top 10 on the Billboard 200.
A macho, guy band fronted by a woman, no less, Chrissie Hynde has the perfect balance of rage and sensitivity. With her trademark dark bangs, dark eyeliner, and dark jeans, she appealed to both genders. The album features Chrissy’s signature vocal styling, James Honeyman-Scott’s melodic and uniquely inventive guitar work, great songwriting and a pulsating bass/backbeat supplied by the rythm section of Pete Farndon and Martin Chambers mixing the best old school with a brave new edge.
Pretenders blend of hard rock, punk, and New Wave established the band’s career. This album compiles several previously-released tracks from their 1979 singles, „Stop Your Sobbing“, written in 1964 by Ray Davies for The Kinks and produced by Nick Lowe, followed in quick succession by „Kid“ and „Brass in Pocket“ which cracked the American market for the band (reaching #14 on the Billboard Hot 100).
This album really did change everything in the dawn of „New Wave,“ the band delivers all that rock convinced us it could.

AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett [-]
Corey Harris takes a decidedly anthropological and academic approach to the blues, deeply researching its variants and origins, even making several trips to Africa to trace out its DNA (resulting in the marvelous Mississippi to Mali), but even as Harris thinks and connects dots like a scholar, when he gets down to playing the songs, he’s all musician, and that leads him to create some wonderful hybrids. One would expect Harris to build further on the Mali connection for this album, but Daily Bread surprises by sounding more Jamaican than anything else, and even includes striking covers of John Holt’s „I See Your Face“ and Sylford Walker’s „Lamb’s Bread,“ which merge the reggae rhythms of the originals with a sort of blues sensibility, while the political „The Bush Is Burning“ is nothing less than full-blown ska. There are two tracks here („Mami Wata“ and „The Peach“) featuring guitarist, trumpeter, and vocalist Olu Dara that do build on the African dimension, with „The Peach“ — a ten-minute-long Griot creation rap — in particular becoming a kind of perfect blend of Africa and Delta, but the rhythmic synthesis is so complete on Daily Bread that everything meshes together like pieces from the same bright quilt. Perhaps the most amazing thing about this album is how ultimately American it sounds (no doubt thanks to the presence of New Orleans pianist Henry Butler on several cuts) in spite of its Caribbean and African lilt, a testament to how well Harris pulls all these different international strands together without losing sight of where his musical journey began. Given his penchant for researching origins and sources, one would expect Harris to have a preservationist approach to the blues, but he’s really more interested in the dynamic possibilities of the genre, and he does this on Daily Bread by looking to Africa and the Caribbean, with the end result being a wonderfully varied and yet unified album that preserves the blues by gracefully expanding the genre’s possibilities.

AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett [-]
Rounder Records began recording New Orleans musicians in 1981 and over a quarter of a century later the label has built up an impressive catalog of Crescent City releases across a wide variety of styles, from rag tag second-line street bands, blues singers, and hard pounding piano soloists to sleek and funky pop, soul, and funk sides. Although this four-disc, 48-track box set is essentially a generous sampler of that extensive catalog, it also functions as a lively and vibrant survey of the pre-Katrina modern New Orleans music scene, a scene shattered and altered by the great storm and its unprecedented aftermath. New Orleans musicians were driven from their homes by the devastation and many of them have been emotionally and financially unable to return. The loss in cultural terms is immeasurable, to say nothing of the crushing personal losses many of these performers endured and continue to endure. So, while it is virtually impossible to listen to this set without falling under the shadow of Katrina, it is nonetheless a joyous, exuberant journey through a city whose music is like no other place on earth. The first disc centers on blues and R&B selections, the second on street and festival bands, the third features funk and soul sides, while the fourth offers up solo pianists demonstrating the various dimensions of the distinctive New Orleans piano style. What isn’t here is much jazz, although it’s safe to say that everything that is included is informed by it in one way or another. The recordings are well done, with bright sound and a delightful immediacy, and tracks like Eddie Bo’s „Check Mr. Popeye,“ Clarence „Gatemouth“ Brown’s horn-driven „Dollar Got the Blues,“ the vibrantly scuffling „It Ain’t What You Think“ by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Walter „Wolfman“ Washington’s „Funk Yard,“ Tuts Washington’s solo piano version of the poignant (especially given recent events) „Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans,“ and the hard charging blast of „Go to the Mardi Gras,“ complete with some pretty nifty whistling by the immortal Professor Longhair, are timeless gems by any standards. Upbeat, vibrant, elegant, and so full of life that one wonders how this music could ever possibly pass from this earth, City of Dreams reminds us not to take anything for granted, and certainly nothing as grand as the music of New Orleans. It isn’t brick and mortar, steel beam or strung wire, but the music of Crescent City is more precious and lasting than any of those things. It’ll take a lot more than Katrina to blow it away. On that you can hang your hat.

Reference-Level Detail, Depth, Soundstaging, Balance, and Presence: Communiqué Has Never Sounded Better

The performances on Dire Straits‘ Communiqué are so smooth and effortless, they were originally criticized for replicating the blueprints of the band’s breakout debut. Time, however, has a way of changing perspectives and exposing the truth. More than 35 years after its original release in June 1979, Communiqué rightfully takes its place as the group’s most underrated record – a nine-track set spiked with engaging storytelling, relaxed vibes, and deceiving simplicity.

Knopfler’s mesmerizing guitar textures and composed vocals appear as if they’re right in front of you, holding court amidst expansive soundstages and deep-black backgrounds. Details, imaging, and presence are on a level associated with the finest audiophile recordings.

Of course, the audiophile sonics mean little if the artistic content is lacking. Needless to say, Dire Straits‘ technical perfectionism and creative elan prevail throughout. Knopfler’s penchant for sketching cynical characters is further developed on moody tracks like „Where Do You Think You’re Going“ and „News,“ while Wexler’s presence at the boards ensures the band keeps the rhythms extra tight. The quartet’s low-key blues and swampy, Southern-styled grooves turn every song into an exercise in understated virtuosity.

Refusing to give into excess, magnetic tunes such as „Lady Writer“ and „Angel of Mercy“ split a fine line between insinuating and insisting. The group shows off a combination of control, virtuosity, and tunefulness that harkens back to a rock n‘ roll’s classic period while also pointing the way ahead. Need indisputable evidence of Dire Straits‘ compositional strengths? Cue up the closing „Follow Me Home“ on this pressing and get lost amidst the peacefulness of the gentle surf and chirping crickets that frame the song. Heavenly.

The Band’s Northern Lights-Southern Cross is, in nearly every respect, the group’s studio swan song. The group’s fifth album is also one of its finest works, a finely textured collection that at the time of its 1975 release marked the quintet’s first album of new material in four years. And what songs they are. Anchored by the standards “Acadian Driftwood,” “Ophelia,” and “It Makes No Difference,” the set finds the collective in peak form, the absorbing music a result of both guitarist Robbie Robertson’s unflappable songwriting and a fortunate confluence of creative factors.

“It was the first time in a while that I felt we had locked in again in a certain kind of way. We were really having enjoyable times together both musically and hanging out. We had a great time going out and playing with Bob, the new environment was refreshing and I think musically we were hungry. You put all these bits and pieces together and it adds up to something.“
–Robertson, as told to Rob Bowman

As Robertson recalls, the Band had been rejuvenated after touring with Bob Dylan and reconnecting with the same muse responsible for inspiring its landmark debut. In addition, the group came to the realization that it worked better when operating outside of traditional recording studios. Akin to Music From Big Pink (also available on Mobile Fidelity Hybrid Stereo SACD) and The Band, sessions for Northern Lights—Southern Cross occurred within a clubhouse-like atmosphere—specifically, a converted Malibu ranch/bordello they called Shangri-La.

There, with the pressure off, the Band was able to relax, think, and take their time. The situation also fostered a new approach to recording. Due to Shangri-La’s dimensions and myriad windows, the Band overdubbed all of the vocals, ensuring unrivaled smoothness and fluidity. In addition, the group embraced the then-new technology afforded by recording on a 24-channel console, allowing for multiple layering of keyboards and overlapped harmonies.

Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition hybrid SACD brings the beauty, intellect, and contours of Northern Lights—Southern Cross to life as never before. Particularly compelling is the priceless “Acadian Driftwood,” on which you can hear the oddly tuned fiddling of bluegrass virtuoso Byron Berline seamlessly mesh with Garth Hudson’s bagpipe and Richard Manuel’s piccolo with unparalleled transparency. Blending Quebecois, Cajun, and country, the song is one of the greatest compositions in the American songbook—and now, even better.

Get Let in on a Secret: Legendary Quintet’s 1971 Album an Overlooked Gem
Historically overlooked, Cahoots stands as one of The Band’s finest efforts and includes contributions from iconic pianist/arranger Allen Toussaint and Irish bard Van Morrison, whose feverish duet with Band vocalist Richard Helm on “4% Pantomime” is the equivalent of two poker players trying to outsmart one another. A similar carnivalesque spirit infuses the entire set. If you’re missing this album or simply never heard it, you’re in for a treat.
And there’s never been a better opportunity to experience Cahoots. Remastered from the original master tapes by Mobile Fidelity’s expert engineers, the record sounds more open, detailed, warm, and revealing than ever before. This Hybrid SACD version is guaranteed to bring you right into the Bearsville studio where it all went down.

Joe Ely is one of the great American survivors. In the early 70s he was a key member of the legendary Texas alt.country trio the Flatlanders, along with Jimmy Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, and by the end of the decade he was touring alongside his admirer Joe Strummer, whom he joined on the 1982 Clash hit Should I Stay or Should I Go? His latest venture is a return to basics, recorded live in Austin with only the fine Tex-Mex accordion player Joel Guzman to back his guitar work. The result is a brave and powerful reworking of songs from Ely’s back catalogue, from the epic Up On the Ridge to All Just to Get to You, a song that was originally recorded in the mid-90s with help from Bruce Springsteen, and now re-emerges as a muscular, slowed-down rocker dressed up with subtle accordion work. Best of all, there’s an exquisite treatment of Because of the Wind, a song that’s 31 years old and still one of the great Texas lyrical ballads

JOE ELY & JOEL GUZMAN“Live Cactus!“Rack ‚Em

ON HIS new concert recording, „Live Cactus!,“ Joe Ely makes a joke about his home town, Lubbock, Tex. „It’s a very romantic place,“ he says, adding after a pause, „if you’ve just gotten out of the pen.“ He then goes on to confess that most of his songs are rooted there: in the narratives of cowboy songs, in the swing of Bob Wills, in the rockabilly of hometown hero Buddy Holly and in the accordion-fueled bounce of Tex-Mex music. That last quality has always been present in Ely’s music but never so obviously as in his collaborations with accordionist Joel Guzman.

The two were bandmates in the borderland all-star ensemble Los Super Seven, and recently they’ve been performing as a duo. This disc captures the two live, playing 10 songs by Ely and one apiece by R.C. Banks, Butch Hancock and Townes Van Zandt (young singer Ryan Bingham joins in Van Zandt’s „White Freightliner Blues“). Guzman is an underappreciated virtuoso of the squeezebox; his thick chords and fluttery runs fill out the sound of Ely’s tenor and acoustic guitar remarkably well. On „Ranches and Rivers,“ Guzman’s accordion answers each line of Ely’s vocals so eloquently that it almost sounds like a dialogue.

„J.D. Crowe & the New South stretched the boundaries of bluegrass throughout the 1970s, and this particular Keith Whitley-fronted band was one of Crowe’s most experimental outfits. While the group’s sole studio album was a masterpiece of modern country/bluegrass fusion, it didn’t tell the whole story of this trailblazing band. Live in Japan fills in the rest of the picture by confirming a basic point: No matter what happened in the recording studio, when it came time to take the stage, J.D. Crowe & the New South was a bluegrass band. At the end of the 1970s, there wasn’t a hotter one anywhere in the world.“ –Jon Hartley Fox, from his the liner notes Here are the only bluegrass recordings made by this late ’70s edition of the New South: J.D. Crowe, Keith Whitley, Bobby Slone, Jimmy Gaudreau and Steve Bryant.
