The second disc of Boccherini quintets adds to our appreciation of the diversity of inspiration that this eternally attractive and quintessentially classical composer achieved. All are within the confines of a choice of personnel that is both unexpected—the string quartet with extra cello—but also very personal, since the principal cello part was to be played by the composer himself and was designed, on some occasions, to be partnered by his royal patron, the cello-playing Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia! Well might we try to imagine the exciting impression they made when this spirited music was first heard and something of this thrill is vividly recreated by Richard Lester as extra cellist with the Vanburgh Quartet. Gramophone magazine noted a touch of the impetuous in Lester’s Boccherini double cello sonata disc (CDH55219), an adjective that perfectly expresses the relish and verve there must have been at those first occasions.

Boccherini wrote over 100 such works. Their quantity has served to hide their quality and while it took relatively little time for the music of Vivaldi to be discovered afresh, the music of Boccherini is only now receiving the attention it deserves. This disc fulfills an important role in that exciting process.

DISC OF THE WEEK (BBC RADIO 3)

‚Beautifully recorded, stylishly played and overflowing with memorable ideas, this is a sheer delight and a must for all fans of 18th-century Classicism‘ (Classic FM Magazine)

‚charming and delectable‘ [Gramophone]

‚I cannot imagine the playing of these quintets being bettered‘ (Fanfare, USA)

Quareteti Italiani. Like most of the musical forms that blossomed in the 18th century (the sonata for solo and continuo, trio sonata, concerto and symphony), the string quartet began its glorious parabola in Italy but bore its ripest fruits beyond the Alps, reaching an apex in the production of the great Austro-German classical composers, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven in the forefront. Quite a few Italian composers, however, also gave original contributions to this genre. The present 10-CD box set offers a panoramic view of quartet music in Italy, from Boccherini’s elegant classical writing, to Malipiero’s controversial stance against Romanticism, passing through Bazzini, Verdi, Puccini and Respighi. Performers are the internationally renowned Quartetto di Venezia.

BOCCHERINI VIVALDI TARTINI Cello Concertos Mstislav Rostropovich

Audiophile Pressing: BOCCHERINI VIVALDI TARTINI Cello Concertos Mstislav Rostropovich – well, who could argue with a statement like that? After all, Mstislav Rostropovich is a supreme virtuoso, a charismatic performer, and a sublime interpreter and virtually every one of his recordings is as good as it gets for the repertoire. The key word, of course, is virtually: while Rostropovich’s Dvorák concerto with Karajan, his Beethoven sonatas with Richter, his Brahms sonatas with Serkin, and above all his Shostakovich sonata with Shostakovich are definitive, can one say the same of his Boccherini, Vivaldi, and Tartini concertos with Paul Sacher?

His virtuosity, his charisma

Or could one say that Rostropovich does not so much play the music of the great Italian Baroque composers as overwhelm it, that his virtuosity, his charisma, and his interpretations are more than the music can bear and that the listener is left not with fond memories of the music but instead with the overpowering impression of an unstoppable musical personality having his way with the music. The results are initially awe-inspiring but may ultimately prove to some to be empty. Accompanied — the more appropriate word might be enabled — by Sacher and the Collegium Musicum Zürich, the greatest cellist of modern times came, saw, and conquered the finest cello concertos of Baroque times. Whether that’s a good thing or not is up to the listener. Deutsche Grammophon’s late stereo sound is utterly transparent but perhaps places the microphones a bit too close to the soloists.
