An exceptional career, for length and consistency: this, in a nutshell, the curriculum of Victoria de Los Angeles, one of the most acclaimed sopranos of the 1900s, a true icon for opera lovers, and one that unfortunately – despite her many recordings and the favour of the press – still remains, for the public at large, in the shade of Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi. Of Catalan origin, Victoria de Los Angeles was born in Barcelona on November 1st, 1923; and in her native city she recently passed away, on 15th January 2005. Hundreds of recordings provide a well-documented profile of the progress and stylistic development of this soprano, whom nature had gifted with extraordinary means as far as the volume and extension of her voice and who, in the course of her artistic path, was sought by the most important conductors, among them Beecham, Karajan, Solti, Monteux, de Sabata, Giulini, Kertész, Metha, and Prêtre. The present 2-CD set features a rich anthology of this singer’s recordings: from the early recordings of the 1940s, to her unforgettable interpretations of Spanish folk songs, to the triumphant Puccini’s and Massenet’s roles of the 1950s.

1949-1955 studio and live recordings

This CD presents a collection of French art songs – mélodies – covering a wide range of emotional and stylistic content from Fauré to Ibert.

– The complex origins of the mélodie can be traced to two song types, the 18th-century French romance and the lieder of Schubert.
– The French composers emphasize the text rather than the melody, and the declamatory style is dominating their vocal writing. The French special sense for beauty manifests itself in the piano part, both in the rich textures employed and in the special harmonies.
– The four Henri Duparc’s songs offer the richest writing for the piano as well as the longest and profoundest emotional experiences on this CD.
– Gabriel Fauré’s style favours the balance of melodic forces and the research for melodic shadings, even though his admiration for Wagner appears in the use of irregular phrases and the use of a melodic line which becomes more free.
– Jacques Ibert’s Quatre Chansons de Don Quichotte, composed in 1931, were included in the soundtrack of the movie ”Don Quixote” directed by Wilhelm Pabst, starring the Russian bass Feodor Chaliapin.
– Ravel’s songs are pure and simple and yet full of profound emotional content. These three songs were Ravel’s last works.

– The dark timbre and the colourful diversity of Colombara’s voice, as well as his extraordinary vocal culture, make him one of the most sought-after basses of our time.
– Critics in Italy and abroad have underlined his stylistic versatility and interpretative suppleness, thanks to which Colombara can project the powerful authority of Verdi’s rulers and father figures just as compellingly as he can breathe life into the filigree cantilenas of Italian bel canto parts.
– ”Carlo Colombara was noble and dignified as Norma’s dad, the head priest Oroveso”
The Wall Street Journal, Heidi Waleson
– ”The other find of the evening was Carlo Colombara, a bass making his New York debut as Mocenigo. Mr. Colombara’s sound is deep and rounded, and he projected Mocenigo’s malign character powerfully but without forcing it.”
New York Times, Allan Kozinn

Il mito di Renata Tebaldi. When Arturo Toscanini heard her for the first time in 1946, he labelled her ”Voce d’angelo” (Voice of an angel). Thus began the myth of Renata Tebaldi, the singer who, in the second half of the 1900s, perhaps better than anyone else represented the perfect example of Italian soprano. This double CD of Istituto Discografico Italiano offers a wide selection of Tebaldi’s interpretations from the years 1949-1953, when the young singer from Pesaro asserted herself on the international scene thanks to her extraordinarily consistent and pure voice, which captivated audiences throughout the world.

Mischa Maisky, Pavel Gililov MEDITATION

Rostropovich of the Future

Born in 1948 in Riga, Latvia, Mischa Maisky received his first music lessons there at the Children’s Music School and Conservatory. In 1962 he entered the Leningrad Conservatory. In 1965 his debut with the Leningrad Philharmonic earned him the nickname “Rostropovich of the Future”. One year later he was a prizewinner at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and began his studies with Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory while pursuing a concert career throughout the former Soviet Union. After being imprisoned in a labour camp near Gorky for 18 months in 1970, he emigrated from the USSR.

Maisky and extraordinary musicians

„In great demand as a chamber player, Maisky has performed with a number of extraordinary musicians, including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gidon Kremer, Peter Serkin, and Martha Argerich. Acclaimed for his renditions of concertos by Haydn and Schumann, Maisky is the only cellist to have received a Deutsche Grammophon offer to record Bach’s complete works for the cello. The year 2000 was dedicated to Bach by Maisky, when he performed all of Bach’s cello works in three recitals in a single day, and presented 100 Bach performances around the world.“ – All Music Guide
