    ]]>     „Jules Émile Frédéric Massenet, 12 May 1842 – 13 August 1912) was a French composer best known for his operas. His compositions were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and he ranks as one of the greatest melodists of his era. Soon after his death, Massenet’s style went out of fashion, and many of his operas fell into almost total oblivion. Apart from Manon and Werther, his works were rarely performed. However, since the mid-1970s, many operas of his such as Thaïs and Esclarmonde have undergone periodic revivals.“

    ]]>     An exceptional career, for length and consistency: this, in a nutshell, the curriculum of Victoria de Los Angeles, one of the most acclaimed sopranos of the 1900s, a true icon for opera lovers, and one that unfortunately – despite her many recordings and the favour of the press – still remains, for the public at large, in the shade of Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi. Of Catalan origin, Victoria de Los Angeles was born in Barcelona on November 1st, 1923; and in her native city she recently passed away, on 15th January 2005. Hundreds of recordings provide a well-documented profile of the progress and stylistic development of this soprano, whom nature had gifted with extraordinary means as far as the volume and extension of her voice and who, in the course of her artistic path, was sought by the most important conductors, among them Beecham, Karajan, Solti, Monteux, de Sabata, Giulini, Kertész, Metha, and Prêtre. The present 2-CD set features a rich anthology of this singer’s recordings: from the early recordings of the 1940s, to her unforgettable interpretations of Spanish folk songs, to the triumphant Puccini’s and Massenet’s roles of the 1950s.

    ]]>     VERSION FROM 1901, BARITON, WRITTEN FOR MATTI BATTISTINI!

    The success obtained in 1999 by the revival of Roma, the opera by Massenet which had fallen into oblivion after its Montecarlo and Paris premières, encouraged the Festival of Martina Franca to explore other scores by this composer, who is very appreciated in Italy. The version of Werther here featured is the one Massenet adapted for the legendary baritone Mattia Battistini. The composer was on excellent terms with Battistini and welcomed the singer’s proposal to transpose Werther’s part from tenor to baritone. The new version of Werther was always sung by Battistini in Italian; the famous baritone never dared appear in this role in France, where he would have been obliged to sing it in French. The first baritone version of Werther was given in Warsaw on 18th November 1901. Another great challenge for Martina Franca’s Festival, now made available on CD by Dynamic.

    ]]>     MASSENET Thais Eva Mei.  The title role, in this excellent production, is sung by an Eva Mei in great vocal form, who gives an interpretation of extraordinary depth. Beside her, the famous bass-baritone Michele Pertusi, as Athanaël, shows once again his unquestionable style. On the podium is Marcello Viotti, music director of the Venetian theatre.
    The story of the conversion of the beautiful courtesan, and the clash between spirituality and sensuality have been portrayed brilliantly by Pier Luigi Pizzi, one of today’s most talented opera directors.

    ]]>     Every operatic composer has a title that marks a turning point, one that raises him from being almost unknown to sudden fame. For Bellini, in 1827, this was Il Pirata, for Verdi, in 1842, Nabucco. For Massenet this opera was Le Roi de Lahore. Performed for the first time in 1877 at the Palais Garnier to a resounding success – the opera ran to no fewer than 57 performances in the great Paris opera house within two years – this work contains all the characteristic elements of grand-opéra: marches and solemn processions, a ballet, use of countless extras, spectacular choral scenes, concertante sections of great length, a general exotic tint that was much appreciated at the time and a great wealth of melodic invention. The present Venetian production features a high quality cast and documents the last performance of the late conductor Marcello Viotti, who had made the critical edition of the score.
