The present one might very well stand as an object lesson in how properly to record a violin soloist. The selection of material is also very fine. Of special interest are the Pergolesi Sonata, the final movement of which was used by Stravinsky in his ballet Pulcinella; the Schumann and Brahms works, which com-prise the second and third movements, respectively, of a sonata these two men, together with Albert Dietrich, wrote in honor of Joachim and the unaccompanied Paganiniana, Milstein’s own very effective medley of portions of several Paganini Caprices. What the short story is to the novel, the ‚encore‘ is to the standard work in the concert repertoire. It’s plot, so to speak, is simple, its content concise, its point quickly made. And among its attributes is the fact, well illustrated by Milstein’s choices here, that it may be drawn from almost anywhere. It may be one movement of a longer work for the instrument, or a transcription of a piece originally composed for another instrument, or it may be – as in the curious case of the Kreiser „Classical Manuscripts“ – what has been delicately termed an „impersonation“.

Among other things, a collection of encores offers a bird’s eye view of a performer’s capabilities. In the case of Nathan Milstein, of course, any need for an evaluation of that kind has long since become superfluous. A recital such as the present one simply creates the opportunity of enjoying old favorites played by one of the great violists of our time.

„Opus 94 is one of the most serene, tuneful, and silky -smooth of Prokofiev’s works and is perhaps his most popular composition for chamber ensemble. It was originally written for the flute, and the present reviewer likes it better that way, especially when there are people like Doriot Anthony Dwyer to record it. Milstein, nevertheless, presents an extremely eloquent case for the violin version, which was made by Prokofiev himself. The violinist’s big tone and broad, generous style are, of course, perfectly adapted to the baroque demands of Handel and Vitali, and the recording of all three works is excellent.“ – High Fidelity

„The double-stopping of the big theme in the Wieniawski and the audible bouncing of the bow in the lightning-quick passages of the Saint-Saëns show Milstein at his best. The Stravinsky is presumably based on the composer’s own arrangement for violin and piano (made with Dushkin), the violin taking not only the melody originally given to the bassoon but all the other phrases that could conceivably be regarded as melody. Here the orchestral part appears to be more than a restoration of the 1919 scoring with fuller woodwind added, conceivably owing something to the original 1911 scoring.
