]]> On his latest album, Warren Wolf reveals an entirely different side to his multi-faceted talents. As the title implies, Reincarnation represents a rebirth of sorts for the Baltimore vibesman. In part it frees Wolf to indulge his love for the R&B and soul hits that served as the soundtrack to his formative years in the 1990s. It’s also a celebration of a new lease on life, a happiness and contentment that he’s discovered through a new marriage and his five beloved children.

]]> Warren Wolf is a one-man band. He can play the vibes, drums, organ, piano and bass – and probably has more per capita gigs than your standard jazz journeyman, owing to this multiplicity of talents. As we all know though he is far from standard, as a founding member of Christian McBride’s Inside Straight, and plays regularly with Aaron Diehl’s quartet (both Mack Avenue Records artists) – kind of a throwback to the incestuous heyday of jazz when everyone played on everyone else’s records, resulting in many classic recordings. Speaking of classics, they are also a strong suit for this young man whom is clearly a musical seeker.

]]> JazzTimes (p.62) – „WARREN WOLF is one stellar document….[Wolf] is a fine composer, whether concocting catchy but unusually shaped pieces like ‚Sweet Bread‘ or building the gloriously anguished ‚Katrina‘ on the template of John Lewis‘ ‚Django.'“ It’s no exaggeration to state that the release of Warren Wolf, the eponymous debut album for Mack Avenue Records by Warren Wolf, will make it as apparent to jazz fans as it already is to jazz insiders that the 31-year-old vibraphonist is the next major voice on his instrument. Joined by a unit of authoritative swingers (bassist Christian McBride, pianist Peter Martin, drummer Greg Hutchinson, alto and soprano saxophonist Tim Green, and, on two tracks, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt), Wolf offers a ten-piece program that admirably represents his singular blend of efflorescent chops, muscular attack, lyric sensibility, harmonic acumen, encyclopedic knowledge of hardcore jazz vocabulary, tireless groove and downright musicality. “I’m trying to bring forth what most cats did back in the day, coming out right at you swinging, nice and hard, not a lot of hard melodies or weird time signatures,” Wolf says. “I like to play really hard, fast and kind of flashy. I like to take it to a whole other level.”
